2011: A Year in Review and Whats the plans for 2012

Hi All,

2011 was a fantastic year!! I managed to get over the Leeds for another month for work which was fantastic! Plenty of snow, had a second christmas in February and caught up with my brother Pat who is now living in London. I also managed to head over to Hong Kong for a week for the wedding of Jess and Tina. That was awesome and so much fun, and I will definitely be visiting Hong Kong again!

As for the list of things i hoped to achieve before the end of 2011, out of my list of 15 things, I believe I managed to achieve 8 out of 15, which is not so great but some where out of my control.
Here is the list of items I successfully completed:
1. Get a little fitter - SUCCESSFUL!
4. Use my camera a lot more - SUCCESSFUL!
6. Build up my photography portfolio - SUCCESSFUL!
7. Do the 365 project and upload a photo every day - SUCCESSFUL! (check it out at gramps365.blogspot.com)
8. Buy an Acoustic Guitar - SUCCESSFUL!
11. Save some more money to build up my property deposit - SUCCESSFUL!
13. catch up with Jane - SUCCESSFUL!
14. increase my numbers on my Blog - SUCCESSFUL! (more than doubled :P)

The ones which I did not complete will roll into the new 2012 list :D

So overall 2010 compared with 2011. Am I:
happier or sadder? Much Happier.
thinner or fatter? About the same.
richer or poorer? Better position financially.

Some of the 2011 highlights:
- Melbourne F1
- Photography excursions
- Movember
- Completing project 365
- Jess and Tina's wedding in HK

Looking forward to 2012, what am I hoping to achieve this coming year?

2012 is looking like a big self development year for me. I aim to start looking into buying a place of my own this year. Not sure if it will be to live in or to rent out, but looking to buy a place nonetheless. I aim to lose 15 kilos by april in time for Joe and Lou's wedding and my america holiday :D I know it might sound crazy, but if I aim high and miss it, at least it is still good :D. I also hope to continue losing weight and continue getting fitter throughout the year. I am also hoping to look into ways of furthering my career opportunities.

As I said a second ago, in April I will heading to the America for a 6 week holiday with 5 mates, which should be outstanding! Heading from the west coast to the east coast, and hoping to catch up with as many of my American friends as I can :D

So 2012 should be a great and very hard working year, and I look forward to every bit of it :D What do you aim to achieve in 2012? Did u make any new years resolutions? let me know by leaving a comment.

Take lots of care and I hope you all have a great, safe and prosperous 2012.

Clean up aisle 9

Hi All,

Recently I was reading a very interesting blog by Lisette Brodey's character Molly Hacker where she was discussing the most annoying bits about supermarkets (check it out at www.mollyhacker.com). While reading her blog, I was filled with memories of my days at my local Coles supermarket where I worked for 6 years.

There was continually funny and weird things happening while working there. A couple that come to mind are:

While serving a teenage boy, I finished the transaction, grabbed the receipt and put it in the bag with his groceries and then said to the guy "Your receipt is in the bag, have a nice day" which brought a very horrified look from the guy followed by "You wanna touch my dad?". I almost died laughing before explaining to him what I actually said.

Another time I was serving an older guy whole was putting all his groceries up on the counter. When i picked up the bag of nuts he wanted to purchase, a few of the nuts fell out. So I told the man that there was a hole in the bag and he should grab some more. While I was waiting for the man to come back, another customer came to the counter thinking I was waiting for some work. I replied with "Sorry, I'm just waiting for a man. He had a hole in his nuts" to which the customer said "Did he go to the hospital". HILARIOUS!!

While I was working there, I got to know the regulars fairly well, but there was always a small number of customers who you would see quite often, but they were a little weird, so I either get to know them very well cos they were fun, or would go out of my way to make sure we stayed strangers.

Now, all these strange characters from the store would eventually get nicknamed by the staff I worked with, whether we knew their names or not. The nicknames were usually fairly unimaginative, such as the old lady who stunk a lot, and would only ever buy cat food. She of course was nicknamed "Smelly Cat Lady" (as I said, fairly unimaginative). Of these strange characters I had a few favourites:

Whitey (Ken): Whitey was a normally lovely old man who lived up the road. I say normally because he had Schizophrenia, and was always very lovely on the days he had not been drinking and forgotten to take his medication. He was a well known in the area as "Whitey", due to the fact that he always had all white clothes on and also had white hair and white beard.
On a good day Whitey would come into the store, walking stick in 1 hand, small radio in the other, dancing to what ever song was playing on the easy listening radio station he was listening to at the time, and always tip his hat to any lady who would walk pass him.

On a bad day (days where he had forgotten to take his meds), Whitey was even more amusing. He was always very opinionated and willing to voice his opinion to anyone who would listen. He would forget the staff members names and call us other names like "Leslie" = "Vicky" and "Felicia" = "Latisha", or would make up nicknames for other such as "Leaping Lina" (that one always made me laugh). He would also talk to inanimate objects such as the tree and bin outside the store. I know its a little bit twisted, but I constantly had ideas of make a change to the bin so that it would talk back to him one day, like that episode of Family Guy where Peter changes the house so it looks like it could talk.

Rev head: Rev head was a old man who used to scoot around the store on a mobility scooper. The only difference was I think he had modified it, cos it had a lot of power, and he was not afraid to use it :P He was literally skid around corners in the store.

The tennis player: The tennis player was another old man who would come into the store with a tennis racquet in his trolley, would only buy canned pears, and would give who ever his lucky victim was a blow by blow description of how his tennis match went. The funniest bit about it was, he was not able to play tennis because he could hardly walk around the store, and would make it all up.

Ok there is one more thing which made my laugh while working at coles and that was the security guard. After 5pm at night, Coles would hire a security guard to stand at the front of the store to stop thieves etc which is GREAT! My only issue with the hiring of the security guard, was that the security guard was normally a very tiny little nerdy man. This fact made the hiring of the security guard completely redundant. There was one time, after closing the store that a man was trying to get in and buy something small, after the security guard told the man we were closed, he began getting angry and banging on the door. After about 15 minutes of the guy going crazy, the security guard called me over to deal with the guy :P So Dumb!

Have you got any funny stories from the supermarket? Maybe you have funny stories from your workplace. Please me know by leaving a comment.

Young and Innocent...

Hi All,

Recently, while looking through old photos, I found myself reminiscing about the weird and wonderful things I used to do when I was a little kid. I was a very shy kid growing up, always hiding behind my mum or dad's leg when being introduced to new people, and when I used to laugh, I would hide my face behind my hands :P

There are a lot of things I used to do as a kid which I have absolutely no answer for, the strangest being one my dad reminded me of the other day. When I started going to school, my dad used to drop me off on his way to work, and walk me to the school gate. However, before he was allowed to leave the car, I demanded that he was not allowed to wear a tie! Strange right?

To this day I cannot not work out why I made him do that hahaha. I am not sure whether I didn't want the other kids at school to think he was actually going to school still, or maybe I thought he looked like a teacher, I dont know :P

There were a few times, back when I was breaking into my rebellious teenage years, where I stormed out of the house, vowing never to return, but then getting to the end of my street and realising I didn't have any shoes on, or I had forgotten my wallet, and had to return sheepishly back to the house :P

There was even one time, where I ran out a had forgotten my wallet, so I decided to sit down at the park for what felt like hours hoping my mum would get worried, but when I returned she hadn't even realised I had left hahahaha.

So how about you? Anything weird or wonderful that you did as a child which you found funny or have no answers for?

Let me know by leaving a comment,

Have a great week and an even better weekend!

My Most Embarrassing Moment

Hi All,

Recently I was asked by a friend of mine what my most embarrassing moment was. Now, I'm not very easily embarrassed, and had to think long and hard about it, but came up with one.

My most embarrassing moment happened back in my early years of high school. The day before Halloween, the senior year decided to have a Mufti Day (also known as Casual Clothes Day, Casual Friday, Own Clothes Day, Home Clothes Day, Plain Clothes Day, Non-uniform Day, Free Dress Day, Civvies Day, Dress Down Day) to help raise money for their school formal.

As part of this Mufti day, they encouraged us all to dress up like it was Halloween. So that night I went home, got my Vampire outfit ready for the next day. The next morning (the day of Halloween) I got dressed up in my vampire outfit, including full face makeup and went to school.

Once I got to school, I quickly realised, that none of the other kids had dressed up at all. Every other kid in the school had just warn casual clothes, and here I am, Vampire makeup on, full vampire outfit looking like an idiot :P

I was so embarrassed hahahahaha.

Its funny, looking back, that is not that bad, but as I said, im not that easily embarrassed anymore so thats the best ive got.

So now its your turn, Leave me a comment and tell me what your most embarrassing moment was?

How to make elevator rides a little more enjoyable

Hi All,

I was talking with some mates the other day, and a friend brought up a story about a funny thing that happened in his elevator ride to work the other day. So that sparked a massive conversation about funny things to say or do in an elevator. I have listed quite a few of them below, and if you have any others, please leave a comment telling me your funny ideas.

- Make race car noises when anyone gets on or off.
- Start moaning softly
- When arriving at your floor, grunt and strain to yank the doors open, then act embarrassed when they open by themselves.
- Stare, grinning, at another passenger for a while, and then announce: "I've got new socks on!"
- Whistle continously the first 7 notes of "Its a small world"
- Say "Ding!" at each floor.
- Stand silent and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off.
- Greet everyone getting on the elevator with a warm handshake and ask them to call you Admiral.
- Ask the others in the elevator which floor they're going to, but push the wrong buttons.

UK Stand Up Comedy

Hi All,

Im sitting here in my apartment in Leeds, bored out of my brains cos its a Sunday night, and its raining outside AGAIN!. So I have taken this opportunity to start watching some of the UK comedy DVD I have picked up.

I LOVE UK comedy. Stand up comedians here in the UK are as big as rockstars. Places which in the past were only known to be filled when going to watch big name musicians, such as Wembley stadium or the 02 Arena, are now being filled by comedy lovers going to their favourite comedians.

So for those of you who are unfortunate enough to not know much about UK comedy or comedians, im going to give you a quick run down of my top 3 favourite UK comedians and a few links to other comedians you should definitely check out.

1. Bill Bailey.

Bill Bailey is an English stand-up comedian, musician and actor. I first began to really like his comedy when I watched him in my favourite comedy series "Black Books" where he plays Manny, the bookshop assistant.
He stand up shows are a great mix of hilarious stories, jokes and music comedy which means its never gets boring. If you saw the his stage before his show started, you would excused in thinking it was a music gig, with instruments littering the whole stage. He can play just about any instrument, and play a lot of them on stage, such as guitar, tuned biked horns and even a swiss horn. Check out a quick clip of him below.

2. Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais is a British comedian, actor, director, producer, musician and writer. you may know him from "The Office" series which he co-wrote, co-directed and starred in as David Brent. The Office UK is my second favourite Comedy series, closely beaten by Black Books. He has also starred in movies and other TV shows, as well as appearing in the "Simpsons" which he also write for. His hilarious stories and awkward humour always has me in stitches. Lately he has been starring with his very good friend Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington in the most downloaded podcast in the world, The Ricky Gervais Show which is one of the most hilarious things you will ever listen to. Check out a quick clip below.

3. Michael McIntyre

Michael McIntyre is a new UK comedian who has been killing the comedy scene in the UK for the last 3 years. His first dvd "Live and Laughing" is the fastest selling debut stand up comedy DVD ever. In 2009 he best won Best Stand up at the British Comedy awards, and throughout 2009 and 2010 he travelled around the UK with his Michael McIntyre comedy road show which showcased a number of UK comedians. Check out a quick clip below.

I definately suggest buying their DVDs, they are fantastic. Also check out the links to clips for the comedians below

Kevin Bridges
Jimmy Carr
Frankie Boyle
Lee Mack
Milton Jones (a very funny, and slightly weird one-liner comic)
Daniel Kitson (VERY VERY FUNNY)
Sean Lock
Rob Brydon (also check out small man inside a box voice)

Let me know who your favourite was by leaving a comment, and if you think i have missed anyone, or can suggest any other comedians who i have not seen before, then definitely leave a comment!

Talk again soon

Cheers,

Starting 2011

Hi All,

So what has 2011 held for me so far.

So most of the start of this year, I have been looking to start marking off as many of the TODO list items I mentioned in my last blog, as I can. So far I have managed to definitely mark off 1.

3 weeks ago I went for a catch up afternoon with the lovely Jane (which was TODO item number 13), and she instantly became my photography subject :P It was great catching up with Jane, we went down to Kurnell, sat out on the rocks for a while, then headed into the national park where we checked out the sheer cliff faces. Check out some photos below.

Over the past week, I have been celebrating birthdays with some very close friends on mine, Melissa and Carl (AKA CDMD), who both celebrated their 26th birthdays. check out the photos below also.

Well for the last 21 days I have been fulfilling a few of the items on my 2011 TODO list, by participating in project 365. So I have kinda marked 2 of the 15 TODO items off the list, those being:
4. Use my Camera More
7. Do the 365 project and upload a photo every day

It has been very interesting, and great fun. A group of my friends are all doing project 365, so it has been fantastic looking at what everyone has been putting up on a daily basis. I must admit, it has been kinda hard thinking of things to take photos of, and even harder is trying to find a title for the photo which was taken :P. Check out the photos I have taken so far at http://gramps365.blogspot.com.

Last weekend myself, Toni and Leo went for a spare of the moment photo shoot at observatory hill. It was a very relaxing way to spend a Sunday evening, sitting up on a hill, looking over sydney harbour. See some photos below. Also on the way home, Toni and I decided we wanted to see what it looked like if we mounted my camera in his car and recorded the trip. It looks kinda awesome, but the memory card ran out way to quickly. Check out the video below:

Tomorrow I am heading back to Leeds for another month of work. Kinda looking forward to it. Plan to start knocking off a few of the other items on my TODO list, namely:
10. Make at least 1 new close friend
11. Save some more money to build up my property deposit
12. Look into an Asian holiday for 2012
and Items 1 and 2 which only people I have told will know

While in the UK, I will hopefully be catching up with a few of my friends from sydney who will be back home in the UK visiting family, and also my brother, who is going to be moving the London for 1-2 years. The Ebbage family have invited Pat and myself to their house to celebrate a 2nd Christmas with them. It should be great fun!

So for those of you playing at home, so far I have
Definitely crossed off the 2011 TODO list:
13. Catch up with Jane

I am on my way to crossing off:
4. Use my Camera More
7. Do the 365 project and upload a photo every day
11. Save some more money to build up my property deposit

Hoping to cross off soon:
10. Make at least 1 new close friend
12. Look into an Asian holiday for 2012
and Items 1 and 2 which only people I have told will know

Now this is where you can help me mark off an item on my TODO list.
14. Increase my number of followers on my blog.

If you are not already a follower of this blog, please go to the right side of this blog, click on the follow button and add yourself to my list of blog followers. It gives me an idea of how many people actually see my blog, and also allows you to comment on my blog posts if you like

Help me mark things off my TODO list :D

2010: A Year in Review and Whats the plans for 2011

Hi All,

2010 was a year of travelling for me, I managed to go for a 6 week holiday through Europe which was un-real, and allowed me to meet some amazing new friends who I hope I will be able to catch up with while travelling in the future. As well as my holiday, I was also able to head over to Leeds late in the year to work for a month which was also amazing due to the snow.

It was a year of fun, going out a lot, catching up with family and friends, making new friends, drinking way too much, but all in good fun.

As for big things that happened around the world which I took interest in:
1. Facebook Dethroned Google as King of the Web
2. Hung Parliment in Australian Government as well as English Government.
3. Tiger Woods was caught with his pants around his legs :P
4. iPad and iPhone 4 were launched.

Movies wise, we saw the rise in popularity of 3D movies again as well as 2010 being a year of remakes or sequels with Toy Story 3, Shrek forever after, Karate Kid, Sex and the City 2, Jackass 3D, Step Up 3D, Robin Hood, Tron, Harry Potter 7 and Paranormal Activity 2 just to name a few.

The Biggest movies of the year in my opinion had to be Avatar, Inception, Shutter Island, Toy Story 3. All great movies and definitely worth a look.

Sports wise we fell in-love with an octopus named Paul who managed to pick every winner in the 2010 South African World Cup, where Spain won the world cup for their very First time.

As for 2010 compared with 2009. Am I:
happier or sadder? Happier.
thinner or fatter? Fatter i think, have not weighed myself lately, but i feel fatter :P
richer or poorer? Better position financially.

Looking forward to 2011, what am I hoping to achieve? Well believe it or not i have made myself a list this year, so that I have something to aim for this year, as well as being able to mark things off a list, which is very very satisfying. I was going to post the list up, but I dont think I want to post it up for everyone to see. If you want to know what my list is, you are quite welcome to hit me up on twitter or leave a comment and I can let you know what my list is.

The thing I am most excited about doing in 2011 is the 365 project. The 365 project is a photography project where you document a year of your life by taking a daily photo. I am doing this to improve my photography skills and to capture otherwise forgotten moments in my life. You will be able to view the photos by clicking here Gramps365 or by clicking on the link which is just under the blog header at the top of this page. I love the idea that someone could view this blog in the future and have a sense of what the world was like at the time the photos were taken, as well as getting a sense of who I am and what I enjoy about life.

Just before I go, my friends and I brought in the new year yesterday by having a fancy dress party at Michelle's place. It was an awesome night, with everyone really getting into the spirit of the night and getting dressed up.
